  • Centuries ago, a thief resting under a mango tree in Dussehri village near Kakori tasted a mango that had fallen from the tree. The fruit was so sweet that even the nawab's guards, who later captured him, were captivated by its taste.
  • When presented before the nawab, the thief shared the mangoes. The nawab, enchanted by the taste, waived the thief's punishment and had the tree identified.
  • The mango variety was named after Dussehri village. Today, Dussehri is grown across the country, though the quality varies due to differences in climate, water, and soil.

Kalimullah mentioned that the Dussehri variety in Malihabad is derived from four saplings gifted by local zamindars, of which two still thrive in the region's mango belt.

U.P. Establishes Heatwave Thresholds for All 75 Districts

Uttar Pradesh has become the first Indian state to establish specific heatwave thresholds for each of its 75 districts. This initiative, led by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), is designed to safeguard public health, optimize agriculture, and assist in urban planning.

Key Highlights:

  1. Three-Tier Heatwave Alert System:
    • A comprehensive study, analyzing 42 years of temperature data since 1982, has led to the development of a three-tier heatwave alert system with yellow, orange, and red alerts.
    • The temperature thresholds for alerts are:
      • Yellow alert: 36.7°C to 40.58°C
      • Orange alert: 39.09°C to 43.30°C
      • Red alert: 41.48°C to 45.34°C
    • These thresholds are tailored to each district based on its historical temperature patterns.

  1. Impact of Heatwaves:
    • Heatwaves are linked to increased morbidity, mortality, and disruption of livelihoods, agriculture, education, and day-to-day activities.
    • This district-specific heatwave system will help reduce reliance on the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and provide more localized warnings.

  1. Implementation of SOPs:
    • The system enables district authorities to implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) such as adjusting school timings, providing medical support, and taking other preventive measures based on local temperature conditions.

  1. Methodology and Analysis:
    • The thresholds were established using a methodology that incorporates the IMD’s concept of temperature deviation from normal, with input from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and World Health Organisation (WHO).
    • The study used the 80th, 88th, and 95th percentiles of historical maximum temperatures to set the alerts, ensuring that the warnings are based on evidence and local temperature patterns.

  1. District-Specific Vulnerability:
    • The study revealed that some districts, like those in Bundelkhand, experience exceptionally high temperatures and require red alerts from the outset.
    • Banda, Jalaun, Mahoba, Prayagraj, Kanpur, and Hamirpur were identified as particularly vulnerable, with heat affecting daily life and agricultural activities.

  1. Significance of District-Specific Thresholds:
    • Dr. Kashif Imdad, a member of the state advisory committee, emphasized that people’s vulnerability to heatwaves varies according to the usual temperature of their location.
    • The new thresholds help create an early warning system specific to each district, enabling timely action without waiting for generalized alerts from external sources like the IMD.

Conclusion:

The introduction of district-specific heatwave thresholds in Uttar Pradesh marks a significant step towards improving public health and disaster preparedness. By implementing a tailored alert system, the state can better respond to extreme heat events and protect vulnerable populations.
